Nigeria’s Telecoms Services Faces Potential Shut down As Workers Begin Strike.
Nigeria’s telecommunications sector faces a potential shutdown as workers from the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association (PTC) have gone on strike. The union announced the strike on Monday, threatening to disrupt telecommunications services nationwide. Secretary-General Okonu Abdullahi stated that over 800 members working at telecom facilities, network centers, and other key areas, including IHS and Huawei, are involved in the action.
The union’s demands include the reinstatement of dismissed workers, official recognition of the union, improved working conditions, and the payment of membership dues. Abdullahi warned of significant disruptions as the strike means engineers will not address service outages, impacting subscribers in affected areas. In response, Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, noted that the PTC is not recognized by major telecom operators such as MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9mobile.
This group is not known to us in ALTON, and the companies mentioned are not members of ALTON”, he stated.
