Senator Ned Munir Nwoko’s bill to establish a Nigerian Defence Academy in Kwale, Delta State, has successfully passed its first reading. The bill aims to amend the Nigerian Defence Academy Act, with the objective of creating a new academy in Delta State to bolster national security capabilities.

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North senatorial district, emphasized the necessity of geographic accessibility and equitable distribution of educational resources across the nation. He highlighted the importance of modernizing military training methodologies and techniques to align with global best practices, emphasizing the utilization of both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

Speaking to reporters, Senator Nwoko stated the importance of establishing a Defence Academy in Delta State to serve the southern region of Nigeria. Drawing parallels with the proliferation of the Nigeria Law School to accommodate graduates from various universities, he emphasized the importance of expanding educational opportunities to promote national unity and inclusivity.

“Nigeria is too vast in population and geography to have only one Defence Academy in Kaduna State. As an academic institution meant to serve the whole country, it will be fit and proper to establish another one in Delta state to bring it closer to the Southern populace. When this is done, the cause of equity and justice will be served and the “One Nigeria” spirit, fortified. Recall that the Nigeria Law School was one, unable to admit Law graduates churned out of the different universities until it was proliferated.

Today, we are all better off reaping the fruit of that noble decision to expand”, the lawmaker stated.
